You love fitness… But you’re bored with your job or your situation. You have seen other coaches build thriving online businesses that give them real freedom over their time and income, and you have probably worked out that Instagram is the platform where most of it is happening.
The question is not whether it is possible. We have helped over 3,500 people do exactly this, including people who started with zero followers, zero clients, and zero experience of online coaching. The question is whether you know the system to turn engagement into clients.
Most people who struggle to sign clients on Instagram are not failing because of a lack of talent or passion, but because they don’t have a clear sales funnel. They post randomly, hope for the best, and wonder why nothing converts.
What actually works is a three-part process that runs on repeat. Attract the right people to your profile, nurture them with content that builds trust, and convert them into paying clients through your stories and your DMs. Here is exactly how each part works.
Part One: Attract
Before anyone can become a client, they need to find you and decide you are worth following. Two things drive that decision. Your profile and how you get your content in front of new people.
On the profile, three things matter. Your profile picture should be warm and approachable, something lifestyle-oriented taken outside of the gym. Photos of you looking lean and jacked or standing in a gym environment can actually work against you because they can feel intimidating to the exact people you are trying to attract. A wedding guest photo, a holiday snap, a night out with friends.
Something that makes you look like a real person who is easy to approach.
Your Instagram handle should be your name. Not your job title, not a fitness label, just your first and last name as cleanly as possible. Mine is simply “@adamhaley1”.
Your bio needs what I call a bold promise. This is a single statement that tells the right person immediately that you are for them. The format is who you help, what you help them achieve, and what they do not have to sacrifice to get there.
Something like, “I get busy overwhelmed parents back into the shape they had before kids without missing mealtimes with the family.” It’s clear, specific, and entirely about the person reading it rather than about you.
Once your profile is set up, you need to get it in front of people. There are three ways to do this and I always recommend starting with the first two before considering the third.
The first is your existing network. Before you try to attract complete strangers, think about who already knows and likes you. Colleagues, old school friends, family members, people in your local community. Even if they never become clients themselves, they can share your content, tag you in conversations, and help spread your name. This is where every coaching business starts, working from the inside out rather than immediately chasing cold audiences.
The second is micro-influencers. These are people in adjacent industries whose clients and followers overlap with your ideal clients. If you coach women on fat loss and confidence, think about your nail technician, your hairdresser, your aesthetician. The women who use those services are exactly the kind of people who also want coaching.
Build a relationship with these business owners, offer to coach them for free, get them a genuinely great result, and have them share the journey with their audience. It is a win for everyone and it brings warm, high-intent followers straight to your page.
The third option is boosting, which means paying a small amount to have Instagram show your best-performing content to a wider audience. I would not recommend this until you are consistently earning over £5,000 a month from coaching. Validate everything organically first and then use paid promotion as fuel on an already burning fire, not as a substitute for the foundations.
Part Two: Nurture
Once someone follows you, your content is what makes them stay and start to trust you. The goal here is not to overwhelm people with complexity. A simple weekly content rhythm done consistently will outperform a chaotic approach every time.
Here is what a solid week of content looks like:
Two reels per week: And before you panic about talking to a camera, you do not have to. You can create reels using B-roll footage, holiday clips, training videos, or lifestyle moments with text overlaid on top. Even a six-second clip of you on holiday with a short caption and some on-screen text qualifies. If and when you get comfortable talking directly to camera, great. But it is not a requirement from day one.
One carousel per week: These are multi-slide posts that work brilliantly for step-by-step advice, client transformation stories, or simple educational content. For example, for me it would be something along the lines of “Here is a client who went from working brutal hours as a police officer to earning eight to ten thousand a month as a full-time online coach. Here is how he did it, step by step.” Or for fitness coaches, something like “Here are my three favourite high-protein meals when I am short on time as a full-time dad.” These posts are practical, easy to follow, and directly relevant to your ideal client.
One tweet-style post per week: A single page, a short, punchy statement or list that someone can save or screenshot. No multi-slide, no long caption. Just a quick hit of value or a relatable observation. These are some of the easiest pieces of content to produce and they often perform surprisingly well.
One personal post per week: This is just you sharing what you have been up to. A photo dump from the week, a meal out with your partner, a sporting event, your kids doing something fun. No long captions required. This is purely there to remind your audience that there is a real person behind the account, someone they can relate to and root for. People follow accounts they like, not just accounts that are useful.
That is your entire weekly content output. Four to five posts, most of which can be produced in a couple of hours when you sit down to batch them.
Part Three: Convert
Attracting followers and keeping them engaged is half the equation. The other half is giving people a clear path to raise their hand and tell you they want help. This happens primarily through your Instagram stories, and there are three tactics that work consistently well.
The first is the direct poll. Share something on your stories, whether that is your own transformation story, a client result you are proud of, or a before and after progress update, and attach a simple poll or emoji sticker. Something like, “Do you want results like this?” Or, “Would you like to know exactly how I did this?”
When someone taps yes or interacts with the sticker, you have a warm signal of intent. Message them, ask what they are trying to achieve right now, and from there the DM conversation begins.
The second is the direct offer. Once a week or once every couple of weeks, post a simple one-page story that tells your audience you are looking for a small number of people to work with. Keep it specific – “I am looking for two or three mums who are stressed, short on time, and want to get back into the shape they were in before kids. If that sounds like you, send me the word results.”
When the messages come in, respond warmly, ask what they are currently trying to achieve, and take it from there.
The third is the indirect poll. This one takes a little more thought but is worth adding into the mix. Share a story about something you personally struggled with before you figured it out, something that your ideal client is currently struggling with right now. Tell them how overwhelming it was and how you eventually found what worked. Then attach a poll asking if they are going through the same thing.
Someone who taps yes on that poll has just told you they have a problem you can solve. Message them and start the conversation.
Each of these three story types does the same thing. They create an easy, low-pressure moment for the right person to raise their hand. Your job then is simply to show up in their inbox, be human and helpful, understand what they are trying to achieve, and at the right moment invite them onto a call.
This is the entire Instagram system. Profile, content, stories, conversations, calls, clients. Nothing complicated, nothing that requires a massive following or a huge personality.
We have had students hit over £6,500 a month with fewer than 600 followers. We have had students go from a private Instagram account with no content at all to consistent five-figure months within their first year. The following is not the variable. The system is.
Inside Online Trainer Education, we give coaches everything they need to run this system, including the exact post templates, caption frameworks, story scripts, DM flows, and sales call process that has helped over 3,000 coaches leave their jobs and build online businesses that give them real freedom over their time, their income, and their life.
