If you are struggling to land online fitness clients, I can almost guarantee the reason is that your Instagram account is not growing.
I say this having worked with close to 3,500 coaches to help them build their online businesses, quit their jobs, and create real freedom over their time and income.
It is the first thing I check when a coach comes to me, saying they cannot land clients. I ask them to pull up their Instagram insights and show me their account growth over the past thirty days, and more often than not, the account is completely flat.
Most business mentors will tell you not to worry about followers, that it is not about the numbers. And they are half right. It is not about the total number of followers you have.
It is about the growth of your account, because growth means new people are becoming aware of you, and without a consistent flow of new people discovering what you do, your business will stall, regardless of how good your coaching is.
What you want to be shooting for is a minimum of one to 3% account growth per month. If you can go above 3%, that is excellent. If you are sitting below 1% or your account has barely moved, that is the problem we need to solve.
There are three levers you can pull to grow your Instagram account. Content, ads, and influencers.
Let me walk you through each one
Lever One: Content

Before anything else, you need to understand how the algorithm actually works, because most coaches either do not know or they have it wrong.
Instagram is a free platform for its users. The way it makes money is through advertisers. And what it rewards, above everything else, is content that holds attention.
Every time you post something, Instagram runs a mini test. It shows your content to the people who engage with you most consistently, whether that is your close followers, your most loyal audience, or whoever watches your stories and replies to your posts regularly.
If that core group engages with the content, Instagram then pushes it out to a slightly wider group of your followers. If that wider group engages, it goes further still, eventually reaching people who do not follow you through the explore page.
If engagement keeps coming, the content keeps getting shown to new audiences. If it drops off at any point, it stops dead.
This is how content goes viral. It is not luck. It is a series of mini tests where the content either keeps earning wider distribution or it does not.
With that in mind, here is the checklist I would run through for every piece of content you produce.
Quality first. This does not mean heavily edited. Some of my best-performing content is a single shot with no jump cuts and no fancy transitions. What it does mean is good audio, good lighting, and a clean image. A wireless microphone from Amazon, costing twenty or thirty pounds, will make a noticeable difference immediately. Grainy footage and echoey audio are scroll triggers, and once someone scrolls, you have lost them.
Play to your strengths on format. If you are naturally good on camera, funny, expressive and comfortable talking to an audience, lean into video. If that is not you right now, written carousels can perform just as well and sometimes better, depending on your niche. Ideally, you do both over time, but start with whatever format you are genuinely comfortable with and build from there.
Find ideas in the right places. Your own story is one of the most underused sources of content. What were your struggles before you made changes? What got you into fitness? What has coaching done for your life?
Beyond your own story, the questions your clients ask you and the struggles you see them go through are a goldmine, because if one client is experiencing something, twenty more are thinking the same thing. You can also look at what top performers in your space are doing, not to copy them, but to understand what formats and styles are getting engagement and then put your own voice and experience on it. And do not overlook creators in completely different niches.
Sometimes, the most interesting content ideas come from watching a creator in a space you would never expect and thinking about how that style could translate into what you do.
Hook first, always. The first line of your content, whether it is the opening of a reel or the headline of a carousel, is the most important thing you will write. It is the only thing standing between someone stopping to read or watch and someone scrolling straight past. Spend more time on your hook than on anything else.
Cut the filler. Nine times out of ten, a piece of content becomes better when you make it shorter. Write it, leave it, come back and delete every word that does not need to be there. The fewer words you use to say something important, the more impact it has.
Avoid the obvious. If your content is telling people to be consistent, stay patient, or drink more water, you are wasting their time and yours. Anyone who lands on your page already knows that. What they want is something they have not heard before that they can actually apply.
Every time you produce value-based content, ask yourself honestly whether this is genuinely new information or whether it is something people will scroll past, thinking, yes, I already know that.
Analyse what works. At the end of every month, go through your Instagram insights and identify your best-performing content. Look at whether it was reels or carousels, talking head videos or written posts, nutrition content or training content. Look at the ratio of followers to non-followers in the reach data. When a piece of content is reaching a high proportion of non-followers, that means it is landing on the explore page and doing exactly what growth content is supposed to do. Use that information to do more of what is working and less of what is not.
Lever Two: Ads

There are two approaches worth knowing about here, and I am going to be direct about which one is right for most coaches reading this.
Running proper Meta ad campaigns through the business manager, with DM funnels, challenge funnels, and call booking funnels, is not something I would recommend unless you are already at a stage where you can afford to hire a media buyer and you have validated your offer organically first.
The learning curve is steep, the cost of getting it wrong is real, and the time you spend trying to figure out Ads Manager is time you are not spending on content, DMs, and coaching.
What I would recommend instead is boosting posts for profile visits. Take your best-performing organic content, adjust the caption to include a prompt to follow your page, boost it, and set the goal to profile visits.
Leave the targeting on automatic and let Meta do what it does best. Meta holds an extraordinary amount of data on every user, far more than you could ever manually target, so trust it to find the right people rather than trying to outthink it. Keep an eye on your cost per profile visit and over time you will see your follower count grow with people who are genuinely your target audience.
If for any reason, you find yourself restricted from Meta advertising, theme pages are an alternative worth knowing about. These are niche-specific Instagram pages built around an interest or identity, such as shift workers, golfers, female entrepreneurs, and so on, that offer paid shoutout placements on their stories.
You can find them by searching your niche on Instagram and reaching out to ask about their rates and audience demographics. It is a more manual process but can drive meaningful follower growth when the right page is found.
Lever Three: Influencers

This is, without question, the most powerful growth lever available to an online fitness coach, and the best version of it costs you nothing except your time and your coaching ability.
I have covered the Micro-Influencer Method in depth elsewhere, but the short version is this. You find people in your network or broader community who have a following that overlaps with your ideal clients, whether that is a makeup artist, a travel blogger, a personal stylist, a hairdresser, or anyone else whose audience is made up of the kind of people you want to coach.
You offer to coach them for free. You get them an incredible result. And in return, they share their journey with their audience authentically, tagging you throughout the process.
The reason this works so well is not just the follower growth, though that alone can be dramatic. It is the quality of the leads it produces. When someone finds you through a micro-influencer they already follow and trust, they arrive at your page as a warm lead.
They are not a cold follower who stumbled across a funny reel. They have been told about you by someone they respect, and that borrowed trust means they are far more likely to end up in your DMs, book a call, and sign up.
We have a student called Alex who came to us with no Instagram account, no followers, and no gym floor experience. She had come from the yachting industry and had just taken her online PT qualification. She learned the Micro-Influencer Method, applied it consistently, and fourteen months later she is doing £28,000 a month.
We have another student, Kerry, who has used the same approach to build a presence in the US from the UK and is now just under £40,000 a month.
The pattern is consistent. Coaches who implement this method grow faster, attract better leads, and close clients more easily than those relying purely on organic content growth alone.
The Three Lever Summary
If your account is not growing, your business will not grow. Check your insights today and find out exactly where you are. If the number is below 1% growth per month, you now know the three levers to pull. Improve your content quality, understand the algorithm, and stop producing anything that does not stop the scroll or teach something genuinely useful.
Consider boosting your best posts for profile visits rather than diving into complex ad campaigns. And start identifying micro-influencer partnerships you can build, because the warm leads that come from a well-run influencer relationship are the easiest clients you will ever sign.
Inside Online Trainer Education, we give coaches the full system behind each of these levers, including content trackers, micro-influencer outreach scripts, and the complete DM to call to close process that turns account growth into consistent monthly income.
