Where to Find Your First Online Fitness Clients

Title_image (1)

If you are just starting out as an online fitness coach, or you have been trying to get things off the ground for a while without much traction, the question you are probably asking yourself is a simple one: Where do I actually find clients?

Before we get into tactics, there is something more fundamental worth settling first, because getting this wrong from the beginning will cost you months of wasted effort.

Stop Trying to Be Everywhere

One of the most common mistakes new coaches make is following advice from big names in the marketing world and attempting to build a presence on every platform at once. Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, LinkedIn, Facebook, all at the same time, all from scratch, all while trying to actually build a coaching business.

It sounds like ambition, but in practice it is a guaranteed way to spread yourself so thin that you make meaningful progress on none of them.

When you are starting out and it is just you, your energy and your time are your most valuable resources. Pick one platform, go all in on it, and build the machine there first. Once it is working, once you have consistent clients and consistent income, then you can start thinking about adding other platforms.

So which platform should you choose?

Why Instagram Is the Answer for Fitness Coaches

There are five main platforms worth considering: Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, TikTok, and LinkedIn. I have tested and thought carefully about all of them in the context of building an online fitness coaching business, and for the vast majority of coaches the answer is clear. Instagram wins, and it is not particularly close.

Here is why, broken down across the things that actually matter.

The audience is right. Instagram has roughly two billion active users, the majority of whom sit in the eighteen to forty age bracket. It is a visual platform, which means transformation photos, progress videos, client results, and lifestyle content all land naturally here in a way that suits fitness coaching perfectly.

If your ideal client is someone who wants to lose body fat, build confidence, improve how they look and feel, they are almost certainly on Instagram and they are consuming exactly the kind of content you would be creating.

The content is flexible. You can do face-to-camera reels, written carousels, voiceover videos, client photos, and your own transformation story. There are multiple formats that work well on the platform, which means you are not dependent on being funny on video or technically skilled at editing.

A simple carousel that took minutes to put together can reach thousands of accounts and generate saves, shares, and followers. That flexibility matters when you are building from scratch.

The growth can happen fast. For example, one of the coaches inside Online Trainer Education, Amy, started with us with zero followers and no Instagram account at all. She was a mum of two who had never used the platform for business. Within four to five months she was earning four and a half thousand pounds a month.

That kind of timeline is genuinely achievable on Instagram in a way that it simply is not on YouTube, where the algorithm rewards patience and the results come slowly.

The conversion is second to none. This is the biggest reason Instagram is the right home for a fitness coaching business. The direct message feature is seamless, immediate, and personal in a way that no other platform comes close to matching.

Someone follows you, you message them within minutes, a conversation starts, a call gets booked, and they could be a paying client within days. That entire journey can happen from one platform without sending anyone to a link, a landing page, or a funnel. YouTube has no DM feature. TikTok barely has one.

LinkedIn has restrictions and clunky inbox functionality… But Instagram is built for exactly this kind of direct, personal conversation.

On TikTok specifically, it is worth understanding why the platform looks attractive on the surface but consistently underdelivers for coaches trying to build a real business. TikTok grows accounts fast because its algorithm prioritises showing people content from accounts they do not follow, which means new creators can pick up views quickly.

But that same feature is what kills conversion. If someone sees your content once but rarely sees it again, no trust is ever built. On Instagram, someone who follows you sees your content regularly, watches your stories, gets a feel for who you are and what you stand for, and over weeks or months develops the kind of relationship that makes them want to work with you.

Trust is the engine of a coaching business and Instagram builds it faster and more reliably than anywhere else.

How to Set Up Your Profile Before You Start

Before you start reaching out to anyone or expecting results from your content, your profile needs to be set up properly.

A poorly set up profile means that when someone lands on it they have no idea what you do, who you help, or why they should follow you. You get one chance to make that first impression and most coaches waste it.

Your profile picture should be warm, approachable, and lifestyle-oriented. Avoid gym shots, bodybuilding poses, or anything that looks intimidating. A simple photo where you are smiling and looking at the camera, taken somewhere outside the gym, consistently outperforms everything else.

Your handle and the bold text underneath your profile picture are the two sections Instagram uses for search. Put your full name in at least one of these, and use the other to include keywords that your ideal client might search for. Fat loss coach, women’s health coach, online fitness coach, whatever fits your niche.

Your bio needs a clear promise. Tell people who you help, what you help them achieve, and ideally what they will not have to sacrifice in the process.

Something like, “I help women who have tried everything drop five to ten kilos of body fat and build genuine confidence, without having to spend hours in the gym or eat separately from their family.”

That kind of statement does the job. It makes the right person feel immediately seen and it makes the wrong person scroll past, which is exactly what you want.

Finish with a clear call to action that speaks to the outcome, not the product. Nobody wants coaching. They want the result coaching delivers. So instead of “Apply for coaching”, try something like “Ready to finally start seeing results or want help dropping your first dress size.” Then link to a simple application form where people can leave their details.

How to Convert Followers Into Clients

Once your profile is set up and you start getting followers, here is the exact process to turn those followers into booked calls.

As soon as someone new follows you, reach out within the first ten minutes. Their interest is at its peak in that moment and drops with every hour that passes.

Send their name as an opening message, then introduce yourself briefly and follow up with a simple question that gives them two things to reply to. Something like, “Are you here for the tips/advice, or are you specifically looking to drop body fat?” That framing makes it easy to reply and immediately tells you something useful about where they are.

When they respond, do not jump straight into selling. Ask for permission to ask a couple of questions to see how you might be able to help them. Once they agree, find out what they are trying to achieve in the next two to three months. Get specific. Then ask what is currently not working as well as it could be that is slowing them down. Let them tell you the real problem.

When they have shared it, give them some relief. Let them know this is something you see all the time and that you have helped people through it before. Then make a simple offer to jump on a short call where you can look at realistic timeframes, do a quick audit of their current approach, and map out what you would do in their position to move toward their goal.

The final message in that sequence is simply, “What do you think?” Two words, sent as a separate message underneath your offer. The reason for this is that when someone checks their Instagram inbox, they only see the first line of the most recent message.

If the first line they see is “What do you think?”, curiosity kicks in, they open it, and because humans are wired to close open loops, they are far more likely to reply. It is a small detail that makes a meaningful difference to response rates.

When they say yes to the call, send your calendar link and immediately follow it with a quick message letting them know you have a short resource or bonus to send them once they have locked in a time. This creates just enough urgency to get them to book now rather than save the link for later.

That is the full journey from first follower to booked sales call. One platform. One profile. One conversation at a time. And from a standing start, that is all it takes to land your first online fitness clients.

Inside Online Trainer Education, we take coaches through this entire process in depth, from platform setup and content strategy all the way through DMs, sales calls, and client delivery, giving them the complete system that has helped thousands of coaches leave the gym floor and build online businesses hitting consistent £3,000, £5,000 and £10,000 months.
